Ammonite fossil for sale found near Whitby, North Yorkshire on the Jurassic Coast

According to legend the founding abbess of Whitby Abbey, Saint Hilda, turned a plague of snakes into stone and threw them off the nearby Whitby cliffs. Legend has it that this act created the Ammonites we find on the shore today. During Victorian times snakeheads were often carved onto the ammonites to honour this legend. 

Here at Yorkshire fossils we are proud to continue this tradition.

Also, although not traditional, we are very pleased to offer these Snakestones with inset ‘birthstone’ eyes for a more personalised touch.

Generally rounded whorl section. Strong ribbing, moderately dense.  Ribs run straight or slightly bent forward across the top (venter).

Maximum size ~11cm, average size ~7cm.

 

Actual ammonite size: 5.3cm

 

Age (lithology): Upper Lias; Toarcian; Bifrons zone; Commune subzone.

 

Distribution: Staithes, Port Mulgrave, Runswick, Kettleness, Sandsend, Hawsker, Ravenscar.

 

Occurrence: Abundant
