Guided Fossil Walks
Being able to share our fossil hunting adventures with others is something we truly love. Everything we offer comes from hands on experience with years spent exploring the beach with our family, alongside a genuine passion for learning through fossil handbooks and home study.
Our guided fossil hunts can take place on a day and at a location that suits you. We currently offer walks at Runswick Bay, Port Mulgrave, and Sandsend, though if you have another location in mind, we’re always happy to discuss options. Each experience lasts around 3–4 hours, during which we’ll guide you on what to look for and help you uncover some fascinating finds together.
The cost is a set £250 per private group (up to 6 people), with additional participants welcome at £20 per person. We keep all tours private, so it will just be your chosen group on the day. If needed, we’ll provide tools and rucksacks for the day. Any fossils you discover can often be opened on the beach, and we’ll happily show you how. If further preparation is required, we can take them home, carefully prepare them for you at a competitive rate, and post them directly to your door. Some fossil are just a little too special to risk damaging them with a hammer and are best prepared with more precise tools.
Fossil hunting is wonderfully unpredictable, some days the beach is quiet, while on others it can be full of treasures. Regardless, we want every group to leave with something special, so we’ll ensure you take home an ammonite (or one within a nodule) from our personal collection, along with our own information sheets about fossils from the local coast. While we can’t guarantee what the tide will reveal, we’ll always choose the most promising locations on the day to give you the best possible chance of making your own discoveries.

Your safety is our top priority. We provide safety glasses and ask that all participants wear sturdy, grippy walking boots. Coastal terrain can be uneven and slippery, and while we take great care to avoid hazards, there is always a natural risk involved, so we cannot accept liability for personal injury or loss. We also maintain a safe distance from the cliffs at all times, as they are unstable - Approaching them is strongly discouraged.
Please come prepared with suitable footwear (wellies or hiking boots are ideal rather than trainers), and consider bringing spare socks and shoes for afterwards. Dress appropriately for the weather, as conditions can change quickly. Due to the nature of the terrain, these walks can be physically demanding and may not be suitable for those with significant mobility challenges, certain medical conditions, very young infants, or pushchairs.
If you have any questions or would like to book a guided fossil walk, please feel free to get in touch. We kindly ask that you let us know of any relevant medical conditions or mobility considerations in advance so we can ensure the best possible experience for you.
