Learn what to look for, where to search and how to recognise promising rocks and fossil material. We'll share the knowledge we've built through years of exploring the Yorkshire Coast and show you how to make the most of your time on the foreshore.

IDENTIFY

We'll help you identify your discoveries and explain what you're looking at, including the fossils, rocks and ancient environments associated with the Jurassic Coast.

REVEAL

One of the most exciting parts of fossil hunting is discovering what's hidden inside an ordinary-looking rock. Where appropriate, we'll show you how suitable discoveries can be safely revealed on the beach.

Some fossils can be opened with a hammer and chisel, while others require more precise preparation. We'll help you understand the difference.

PRESERVE

We'll explain how to clean, prepare and preserve your discoveries, including advice on displaying your fossils once you get them home.

WHEN SHOULD YOU GO FOSSIL HUNTING?

QUIETER SEASONS CAN SOMETIMES OFFER BETTER OPPORTUNITIES

Fossil hunting is unpredictable, but the time of year and how busy a beach has been can make a difference. During UK school holidays and other busy periods, popular beaches can see significantly more people searching the foreshore. Freshly exposed material can therefore be discovered quickly.

Out-of-season fossil hunts can often be particularly rewarding, as quieter periods may mean fewer people searching and more opportunity to explore areas before other fossil hunters reach them. That doesn't mean every winter day will be better than every summer day. Recent tides, storms, erosion and coastal conditions can have a much greater effect on what is actually exposed.

WE'LL MAKE THE MOST OF THE CONDITIONS

Although we can't guarantee what the tide will reveal, we'll always choose the most promising location available on the day based on your group's accessibility requirements, the conditions and what we believe offers the best opportunity for fossil discoveries.

We'll always aim to find the best balance between accessibility and fossil potential for your group.

A LITTLE EXTRA FROM US

WE WANT YOU TO EXPERIENCE THE EXCITEMENT OF FINDING A FOSSIL

Fossil hunting is naturally unpredictable. Some days are incredibly productive, while others can be much quieter. We can't control what the tide exposes, but we can make sure your experience is about much more than simply walking along a beach looking at rocks.

If we don't find a suitable fossil during your hunt that can safely be opened using a hammer and chisel, we'll provide an ammonite, or an ammonite within a nodule, from our personal ammonite reserve for you to reveal on the beach. That way, you'll still get to experience the excitement of cracking open a genuine Yorkshire fossil and discovering what's inside.

You'll also receive our own information sheets about fossils from the local coast, giving you something to take home and continue learning from.

YOUR SAFETY COMES FIRST

The Yorkshire Coast is a natural environment, and conditions can change quickly. Foreshore walking can involve uneven, slippery and physically demanding terrain.

WE PROVIDE

Safety glasses · Fossil-hunting tools · Rucksacks where required

WE RECOMMEND

Sturdy walking boots or wellies · Good grip · Weather-appropriate clothing · Layers · Spare socks or footwear

Cliffs and coastal rock faces can be unstable. Approaching unstable cliff areas is strongly discouraged. Due to the nature of the terrain, these walks can be physically demanding and may not be suitable for those with significant mobility challenges, certain medical conditions, very young infants, or pushchairs.
